Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Beta Zeta Omega Chapter, is South Carolina’s first and oldest chapter of any other Greek-letter sorority established by and open to African-American women. What began in 1934 with just five women in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has been perpetuated by countless others for over eighty-five years.
Chartered in 1934, Beta Zeta Omega has the distinction of being the oldest graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in South Carolina. Historically, Beta Zeta Omega has provided leadership and fostered scholarship and service to many social and scholastic causes in the community and through global initiatives.
Its membership of over 200 professional women is bonded by vows of sisterhood and is not only actively involved in improving the quality of life in its community but also in improving the human conditions around the world.
Beta Zeta Omega is very proud of its signature program, the annual Calendar Doll Pageant, in which thirteen middle-school girls vie for the title of Miss Calendar Doll and are showcased in a pageant and on the chapter’s calendar. The proceeds from the pageant funds six scholarships that are awarded to deserving students who apply for one of the six awards: Academic I; Academic II; Partners in Mathematics and Science; Bethune-Bowman, Beta Zeta Omega’s adopted school scholarship, and the Sisterhood Scholarship.
